Quarterback:

Cam Newton:(vs New Orleans) Cam has been underwhelming to start the season, and that could be in part due to the lack of work in the pre-season. He lost his reliable tight end, Greg Olsen, in week 2 so one would think his stock should take a hit. And it very well could…Just not this week, when Cam and the Panthers have a home game against the league worst New Orleans Saints defense.

Jay Cutler: (vs New York Jets)  It’s a road game for the Dolphins, but Cutler takes on the New York Jets. The Jets defense has given up over 400 yards a game and a league worst, sixty-six points. I like all the Dolphins in this one including Parker, Landry, Stills, and of course, Jay Ajayi.

Running Backs:

Theo Riddick: (vs Atlanta) Going back to last year, the Falcons have had a tough time defending pass-catching running backs. We saw what Tarik Cohen and Ty Montgomery did to them in weeks 1 and 2 respectively, and now the Falcons are going to be without top defender, Vic Beasley.

Christian McCaffrey (vs New Orleans):  McCaffrey could be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the Greg Olsen injury. While they may look to get him more run in the backfield, his value here comes with the added responsibility as an underneath pass catcher, and safety net for Cam Newton. While his overall fantasy numbers may be lower than expected, it is worth noting that he was open on a couple of occasions near or in the end-zone, in which Newton missed him.

Tarik Cohen: (vs Pittsburgh) Jordan Howard is banged up and his week 3 status is still “ up in the air”, though he should play. Even if Howard gets the nod to play, Cohen could see a bit more work in the running game, and you have to expect he’ll be used heavily in the passing game with the Bears playing from behind. No doubt he possess added value in PPR leagues.

Wide Receivers:

J.J. Nelson (vs Dal): We recommended John Brown last week as a start, and then adjusted it to J.J. Nelson once news came out that Brown was not going to play. Nelson, was involved in week 1 even when John Brown was out there, and now with Brown out again for week 3, we like Nelson against a Dallas secondary that could give up the big play. Jaron Brown, who saw 11 targets in week 2 is also a sneaky candidate as a flex play for week 3, especially if Nelson is out as well (Currently Questionable)

Martavis Bryant (@ Chicago) Chicago gives about 250 passing yards a game. Look for them to emphasize controlling Antonio Brown (though probably not successfully ) since they saw Mike Evans eat them up for 7/93/1 in week 2.  Bryant should be able to have his way with the Bears secondary.

Others we like this week:

Marqise Lee

Davante Adams

Quarterbacks

Marcus Mariota: (vs Seattle): Mariota has been a disappointment through the first 2 games, and his matchup in week 3 isn’t going to change that. While we aren’t worried about Mariota long-term just yet, this is not the week to have him in your lineup and hope he gets it going.

Running Backs

Chris Carson (@ Tennessee): Nothing really scary about the matchup, so his spot on this list has nothing to do with it. We saw Carson carry the load in week 2, and looks as if he has taken the control of that backfield. However, we all know how fantasy football is. You expect something to happen and then the opposite occurs. We just want make sure that the lack of Rawls’ usage was not a just a factor of “easing him back in” after his injury. We’re high on Carson and should be owned in all leagues for sure, but let’s wait a week to make sure the job is his.

Bilal Powell (vs Miami) : Powell was being drafted as a low-end RB2 /RB3 in many areas due to the impact and production he had in the second half of last season. This season however, is a different story. The Jets are in full tank mode, and that obviously includes not using their most productive running back. Earlier in the week, the team came out and said that they would be going with a committee approach, using all three backs on their team. Powell needs to remain on your bench for week three, and even though we’d like to hold onto him, he’s quickly approaching being on the cut list.

Wide Receivers

Dez Bryant:(@Arizona) Dez is on the SIT list for the 2nd straight week. He did come through in week 2 vs Denver, with about 20 points in PPR leagues. While Dez did score early in the game when it was competitive, a lot of his volume was in part due to the large lead that Denver built up. Dez will see a lot of Patrick Peterson in week 3, and this game should be a little more competitive than the one in Denver.

Rashard Higgins (@Indianapolis) We love the matchup for one this week’s hot waiver claims, but sometimes you just have to go against the grain. Higgins was just activated from the practice squad on Saturday, before reeling in 7 balls (11 receptions) and 95 yards on Sunday vs the Ravens. Ricardo Louis is the guy I want for week 3, but neither player is worth having in your lineups for season long leagues. Both are good plays for your daily GPP games though.

Tight Ends

Ed Dickson (@ Carolina): There’s a chance I could take a killing with this week’s column, but who wants to read the same start / sit advice from every outlet? It was a pretty tough week to find a tight end to “sit” with all the injuries and questionable tags, so we went with another waiver wire pickup. Everyone loves to insert their new toy into their lineup right away, but let’s hold off a minute on Dickson. Dickson may end up having some value as the season goes along, but he’s not Greg Olsen. Even though the Panthers draw a terrible Saints team in week 3, Cam and company will be looking for more contributions from Christian McCaffrey, Devin Funchess and of course, Kelvin Benjamin, before looking Dickson’s way.
