Wentz Traded to Colts

April 20, 2016. The Eagles trade two first round picks(2016 #8 & 2017), one 2nd (2018), one 3rd (2016), and a 4th (2016), to move up from the 8th spot in the draft to the second overall. Six days earlier the Rams gave up a bounty to move up to the #1 overall selection and the rights to draft Jared Goff. Which they did. The Eagles made that move for Carson Wentz. The North Dakota State quarterback with mediocre college production was going to be the face of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Wentz carried that mediocre production into Philly for his rookie season, but that’s expected for a first year quarterback. The sophomore NFL season was a different story. On his way to an MVP type season, going 11-2 as the starting quarterback. Thirty-three touchdowns and seven interceptions was the best part for Wentz, while his completion percentage and QBR was nothing to get excited about. That’s really neither here nor there considering the NFL is about winning, and winning is exactly what he was doing. Then came the injury. Nick Foles took over and well, you know what happened from there.

We don’t need to get into what happened the past three seasons other than of course, the Eagles drafting Jalen Hurts in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft. Not something that sat well with Wentz, but things got worse when he was benched and had to watch Hurts start over him. Despite the issues with Doug Pederson and the team moving on from him this offseason, they decided to part ways with Wentz as well. The first and second overall picks in the 2016 draft will both have new addresses in 2021.

With the Eagles trading Wentz to the Colts, we have to look at what that means from a fantasy perspective. We may not see Wentz return to that MVP form of 2017, but this is probably as good a chance for that happening as any. Colts Head Coach, Frank Reich, was the Eagles Offensive Coordinator during that aforementioned 2017 season. In addition, Wentz now finds himself on a team with a dominant offensive line, that even on a down year was top 10 in both pass and run blocking. However, there is going to be a loss on the left side of that line with the retirement of Left Tackle Anthony Castonzo. With Jonathon Taylor at running back, and a group of talented young weapons in the receiving corps, Wentz should be looked at as a mid-tier QB2 for the 2021 season. Of course, there is always the possibility of him being a bit over-drafted, as is often the case when a player switches teams for the better.

As for Jalen Hurts. There is still plenty of time to see what the Eagles do in free agency and the draft, and most expect them to bring in someone to compete with Hurts for the starting job. Assuming Hurts wins that job, he’s currently ranked just inside QB1 territory, as his running ability gives him a safe floor on a weekly basis.
