This is the first time since 2007 that the New York Football Giants have a new General Manager. Jerry Reese ran the last 10 drafts for the Giants, but it was time for a change and for the organization to go in a new direction. I decided to take a look back at Dave Gettleman’s draft history from his time in Carolina to get a better idea of his style of draft. History can help paint a picture of the future and give us some idea in the way Gettleman may draft in the 2018 NFL draft. He drafted a total of 28 players during his time as the Carolina Panthers General Manager, from 2013-2017.
I split up the picks by day 1&2 picks and day 3 picks: Day 1&2 picks are rounds 1-3 and Day 3 picks are rounds 4-7.
Here’s how it breaks down if by position:
Rounds 1-3
DL | 5 |
---|---|
WR | 3 |
OL | 2 |
DB | 2 |
LB | 1 |
RB | 1 |
TE | 0 |
K | 0 |
Rounds 4-7
DL | 0 |
---|---|
WR | 0 |
OL | 2 |
DB | 4 |
LB | 2 |
RB | 4 |
TE | 1 |
K | 0 |
Some notable trends that stand out:
1. Gettleman LOVES to take defensive lineman early. Three DT’s and two DE’s have been taken by Gettleman in the first 3 rounds of his five drafts.
2. Offensive line picks are made in the mid- rounds. You can’t tell from how the chart above is broken down, but of the four OL Gettleman has taken, two have been in round 3 and two have been in round 4.
3. DB is his most drafted position. DL is a close 2nd with five, but Gettleman has taken six defensive backs out of his 28 picks. That’s 21% of his picks being in the secondary.
4. He’s a fan of taking a RB at the end of drafts. He’s taken a RB with his final pick of the draft three times out of his five drafts.
Gettleman has made four trades on draft day, and all four have been to move up in the mid rounds of the draft. It seems Gettleman is not shy to be aggressive in the draft if there’s a player he likes:
Acquired | Team | Gave Up |
---|---|---|
2014 fifth-round draft choice (148th overall) (Bene Benwikere – DB) | Minnesota | 2014 fifth-round draft choice (168th overall) 2014 seventh-round draft choice (225th overall) |
2015 second-round draft choice (41st overall) (Devin Funchess – WR) | St. Louis | 2015 second-round draft choice (57th overall) 2015 third-round draft choice (89th overall) 2015 sixth-round draft choice (201st overall) |
2015 fourth-round draft choice (102nd overall) (Daryl Williams – OG) | Oakland | 2015 fourth-round draft choice (124th overall) 2015 fifth-round draft choice (161st overall) 2015 seventh-round draft choice (242nd overall) |
2017 third-round draft choice (77th overall) (Daeshon Hall – DE) | Arizona | 2017 third-round draft choice (98th overall) 2017 fourth-round draft choice (115th overall) |
What to take from all of this:
A lot of people are clamoring for the Giants to trade back from 2 this year to add more picks, but much like Jerry Reese, Gettleman has never traded back in the draft – so history says don’t count on it. If QB is not the pick, do not be surprised to see Bradley Chubb be the Giants #2 pick. Gettleman loves taking defensive lineman early in the draft, with two of his five first round picks being on the defensive line and four of his five defensive line picks being in the first two rounds. Gettleman did take Christian McCaffrey last year with the 8th overall pick, so there is precedent for you Barkley fans out there, but I still wouldn’t expect a RB to be taken by the Giants until day 3.
This should be a very exciting draft for Giants fans with a new GM making the picks. Three more weeks until the draft arrives. Until then, sit back and enjoy the ride.
