Deebo Samuel and the potential of him being traded, took the spotlight in the days and weeks leading up the draft. However, it was star wide receiver AJ Brown that was dealt during the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Brown was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for the 18th and 101st overall picks. The trade was kept under the radar, but was obviously in the works for some time, as the Eagles quickly had Brown locked up on a 4-year $100M contract, with $57M guaranteed. Brown was a consensus top 3 fantasy wide receiver during fantasy drafts in 2021, but finished as the #32 wide receiver due to only playing in 13 games. In our early 2022 draft rankings , Brown is currently our WR11. When Brown was on the field for Tennessee, he saw almost 27% of the team’s targets, with nobody else even remotely close. The move to Philadelphia doesn’t seem to favor Brown, from a fantasy perspective, though it doesn’t exactly hurt him either. The Eagles and the Titans ran the ball more than any other team in the NFL in 2021, but you would have to imagine that philosophy is going to change some for the Eagles with their new addition. Philadelphia needs to allow Hurts to throw the ball more, to really see if he’s the long-term answer at quarterback. However, Hurts struggles with accuracy and already has some chemistry with DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert. Smith and Goedert combined for a 36% target share in 2021. The addition of Brown in Philly is not only going to limit his production, but Goederts as well. Goedert was TE10 last season on 15% of the teams’ total target share, and I would have to imagine that number will decrease with the addition of Brown. As for DeVonta Smith, while his 21% target share may decrease, his overall production may actually increase. There was nobody else on the Eagles that opposing secondaries had to focus on, so with Brown taking a lot of the attention, Smith could be in for a more productive season. DeVonta finished as the WR29 last season, and we currently have him at WR25 in the early initial rankings.
