Kirk Cousins. Allen Robinson. Case Keenum. Sammy Watkins. Weston Richburg. Jarvis Landry. Andrew Norwell. Malcolm Butler. Tyrod Taylor. Trey Burton. Drew Brees. GONE. Okay, okay, Drew Brees wasn’t really going anywhere even if rumors were floated that he might be on the move. I get it, Tyrod Taylor and Jarvis Landry were both traded to Cleveland. But the clock is ticking!
It’s the evening of Tuesday, March 13, just a little over 24 hours after “free agency” in the NFL began. Yes, players can’t technically sign with any teams yet, but who are we kidding? It’s just another way to make the NFL a year-round business of entertainment. Years ago, reporters were camped outside players houses on the eve of free agency and companies like ESPN made fortunes off all the coverage that was provided. Don’t get me wrong, they know what they are doing. I’m certainly hooked and checking numerous media outlets to find out who the next to sign will be. But right now, all I care about is one name. Probably the name that most people out there that were craving a franchise quarterback cared about…Kirk Cousins.
Minnesota, New York, and Arizona have been waiting on baited breath for the QB darling’s decision. So much so, that in New York, the Jets have appeared to forget there are other free agents to pursue. You are all probably asking yourself, WHAT ARE THEY DOING!?!?!?!
The New York Jets, one of the perennial laughingstocks of the NFL just can’t seem to get anything right! 90 million freaking dollars and they have done absolutely nothing. Well here’s an idea Mr. Macagnan…how about you get on the phone, bring some players in and convince them to come and sign with your franchise. Maybe, juuuuuust maybe, that might’ve been enough to convince Kirk Cousins to give your team a chance. Why in the world would Cousins want to come to New York to play with Bilal Powell, Jermaine Kearse, Robby Anderson (if he’s not in too much legal trouble) and … Sorry, I couldn’t think of any other playmakers. Wait, did I say playmakers? I mean… Nevermind.
Nothing against these guys, but they are not moving the needle to convince a guy like Cousins, that wants to win, to come here. Cousins has compiled some serious statistics the past few years and given the right weapons, can absolutely lead a team deep into the playoffs. He would’ve instantly become the most prolific quarterback in franchise history. Yes, Broadway Joe brought us our only Super Bowl, but Cousins is a different quarterback playing in a different league today. But it was up to you Mikey Mac! $90 million is a boatload of money and it needed to be spent somewhere. You could sign a Carlos Hyde or a Dion Lewis. You could sign a young wide receiver like Paul Richardson. At the very least, contact their damn agents. As usual, the crickets are barely chirping at Florham Park. Now that it has been reported Cousins will be signing with Minnesota, it’s on to plan B. Is that Teddy Bridgewater, Josh Rosen, Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen or someone else? Is there actually a plan b?
Well, apparently, there is a plan B…and it deserves a grade of an F. Are you kidding us Mr. Maccagnan??? You build up
your cap so you can sign Josh “FREAKING” McCown and Isaiah Crowell? This team is beyond help. Reports right after Cousins signed with Minnesota were that they Jets were onto Bridgewater and possibly nearing a deal. (UPDATE: Teddy Bridgewater and the Jets have agreed on a one-year contract) Now, they have re-signed Josh McCown for $10 million and informed him he is the starter. Man, oh man, you have to hope this team has something up their sleeve. It’s time to put up, or shut up, Mikey Mac! Jets fan are waiting, and the clock is starting to tick faster on your tenure in the front office. What will you do?
