Fantasy Impact: Kenny Golladay
Kenny Golladay agreed to the terms of a contract with the New York Giants on Saturday (3/20/21), giving them a much needed #1 receiver..What about his fantasy value moving forward? Well, Giants fans are thrilled and should be, but his dynasty managers shouldn’t be all that excited. We have to compare the Giants team that he’ll be playing for, with the past Lions teams to come to a logical expectation for him.
The Giants defense is better than the Lions which results in less time on the field for the offense (Lions were rated last in the league according to PFF). Saquon Barkley will be back from his ACL injury and be on the field, and despite Golladay being there, the Giants are a running team and will rely heavily on Barkley and the ground game. Daniel Jones isn’t at the level of Matthew Stafford at this point, and Jones is going to have to keep not just Golladay, but Shepherd, Slayton and Engram all happy by giving them the ball. One ball, too many guys? In a sense yes. Shepard and Slayton are most likely well aware that K.G. is the main guy in the passing game, but that doesn’t mean they won’t want their share of the pie too.
Bottom Line: You’ll see in my rankings that I probably won’t have Golladay ranked as low as many others. I believe in Daniel Jones and I believe in Kenny Golladay. Last season, I ranked Daniel Jones inside my top 12, and it obviously didn’t work out that way. The good news is, historically I’m a year too early on a player’s breakout season, which means this is the year D.J.takes that step forward. I mean let’s face it…He has to. Unlike Sam Darnold across the stadium, the Giants gave Jones actual weapons for his 3rd season. It’s make or break time now. I may not have him (Golladay) ranked as such, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Golladay finish the season with 65 receptions, 1100 yards and double digit touchdowns…Which would be good enough to be a WR1.
